Which is the best umbrella in India? | New & Updated For Monsoon

Well, after hours of research I found Solimo Automatic Travel Umbrella to be the best umbrella in India.

I prefer black, medium-sized umbrellas with a button type opening system and the Solimo umbrella met all the requirements.

Your requirements may be different – so read on… I’ve reviewed almost every type of umbrella.

Best Umbrella in India

UFUs – Unidentified Flying Umbrellas

I was too late to buy an umbrella last monsoon season- which cost me my phone. It rained unexpectedly early, and I was without an umbrella. I wrapped my mobile in a plastic carry bag Рa cheap way to water-proof a cheap phone you know.

However, I didn’t notice the plastic bag had a tear. Thus, lost my phone. It got entirely drenched in rainwater. That sudden downpour proved expensive. Drying under a warm bulb didn’t help. In short – loss of phone, and the money that I spent to buy that phone. – All gone. ūüôĀ

For this reason, I decided Рhenceforth I will purchase an umbrella well in advance, way before the first monsoon shower.

Thus, my research to find the best umbrella for the upcoming rainy season started way back in early May.

Types of umbrellas – Which one is the best for you? (A short umbrella buying guide)

Just before the southwest monsoon arrives in India, our entire local market sells monsoon accessories. Raincoats, all-weather shoes, gumboots, waterproofing plastic sheets and of course Рvarious types of umbrellas flood the market.

Bridal Umbrella

Bridal Umbrella – (from – www.secretfashionfixes.ie)

I found almost half a dozen types of umbrellas. Let me give you more info on each one now.

  1. Firstly, there are umbrellas for men, women and kids.
  2. Then, size comes into the picture Рcompact, foldable and large.
  3. The design is important too – there are black umbrellas, coloured umbrellas and the ones with fancy graphics.
  4. Not to forget – there are umbrellas with different quality of materials. Higher the quality of umbrella material, costlier is the price. I prefer quality over style, I buy costlier but longer lasting umbrella.
  5. Lastly, there are different mechanisms Рautomatic button operated umbrellas, manual umbrellas, and ultra sophisticated double fold umbrellas. This year, amazingly compact triple fold umbrellas are in fashion.

Ultimately, you decide what type of umbrella is best for you.

Easy guide to buying an umbrella:

  • Pick a black coloured umbrella – it is gender neutral so both men and women family members can use it
  • Pick a mid-sized¬†umbrella. Too small umbrellas can wet you in a heavy downpour, too large umbrellas can be a pain to carry around
  • Pick higher quality of the material. Such umbrellas can be expensive, but they don’t get small holes in the canopy even after long time use. Stitching is also long lasting in higher quality umbrellas
  • Prefer simple one button umbrellas with maximum 2 folds. More the folds, easier it is for an umbrella to break

Do you have a habit of forgetting umbrellas here and there?
Well, yeah, few people keep loosing umbrellas, and they sometimes have to buy multiple umbrellas during every monsoon season.

Read this article to learn a simple trick to prevent forgetting umbrellas here and there (opens in a new tab).

A low-cost umbrella will help reduce losses till the time you get into the habit of remembering to pick your umbrella.

Which are the best umbrella brands in India?

Generally speaking, I prefer buying durable and quality umbrellas which can last until I forget them somewhere. For this reason, I prefer branded umbrellas. Best of the umbrella brands may be a tiny bit more expensive. Even so, they save money in the long run.

Another key point – you can rely on them, they hardly fail on you. The last thing you would want is an umbrella jammed up and not opening in heavy rain.

Getting wet is not a problem, staying in wet clothes for a long time can make you sick. What can also be disastrous is the water damage to a typical non-water proof smartphone. I’ve experienced the pinch.

Ok, let’s get to the point. The best umbrella brands in India are…

Sun Umbrellas

Sun is the oldest known umbrella brand in India with the foundation dating back to 1880. Experience matters a lot, and they boast 135 years of expertise in manufacturing umbrellas in India. It is based in Mysore, but they sell umbrellas all over India.

What I like is the spirit of innovation. They keep modernising their factory regularly which brings newer and better umbrellas to us – the customers.

In short, Sun Brand Umbrellas are a perfect combination of quality and features.

POPY Umbrellas

POPY Umbrellas is the third oldest umbrella brand in India. It was founded in 1940 and quickly gained the trust of the customers. Popy brand started selling umbrellas through a small store first, then moved to large-scale manufacturing.

It has won several awards and certifications for the quality of the umbrellas it produces.

Even Popy keeps innovating and has brought unique products like nano umbrella – which is just 16cms long when closed.

Popy is based in Alleppey, Kerela but the umbrellas are available not only all over India but also overseas.

To summarise, Popy is another old and trusted brand with belief in quality and innovations.

Citizen Umbrellas

Citizen Umbrellas was established two years after Sun Umbrellas – in 1882. They are one of the most trusted brands in and around Mumbai. Unlike other old and trusted umbrella brands, they have 3 factories in different parts of India. Having 3 factories means the rate of production is high making them readily available at shops.

Citizen Umbrella Factory

Citizen Umbrellas caters to the Indian market only and are comparatively cheaper than other brands. Quality wise there umbrellas are sturdy and durable.

All in all, Citizen Umbrellas are quality products at reasonable rates.

John’s Umbrellas

To be honest, John’s Umbrellas is the most modern brand of Umbrella manufacturer in India. And to my surprise – they are into umbrella manufacturing for 70 years. Wow! A modern company with 70 years of experience!

Why do I say they are the most modern brand? Their website is up to date; they regularly put umbrellas on sale like other e-commerce companies & they manufacture innovative umbrellas with led light and fan. Yeah, if you use an umbrella for sun protection, then the fan will help keep you fresh on a sunny day. Whereas, LED light umbrella can make you visible to passing cars on a dark rainy road – that way no vehicles bump into you due to low visibility.

They are also based in Kerela, a state which receives torrential rains.

I found John’s umbrellas to be modern, long-lasting and available in all budget range.

Amazon Basics/ Solimo Umbrellas

Solimo umbrellas are the newest of all the brands. It is exclusive to Amazon. You won’t find Solimo umbrellas in local stores unless someone is buying them online and selling it locally.

Solimo umbrellas are basic, function over form type umbrellas. They don’t come with fancy designs and variety.

What I liked about Solimo Umbrella is one button open and close function at a reasonable price.

Did you know?
Mahabharata Рwhich was written in 4th century BC has reference to an umbrella.

Which is the best umbrella in India for kids?

Indeed, we all want our children to remain healthy. Occasionally playing in rainwater can be fun and healthy, but not when they are going to school. If kids stay in wet clothes throughout 4-5 hours in school, then chances of them falling sick are high – which, we all want to avoid. To protect kids from rains, I would suggest a raincoat.

But, you would agree – some kids hate raincoats as it is a hassle to put one on and off throughout the day.

In contrast, kids can open and close umbrellas in a few seconds, so they prefer an umbrella over raincoats. Lazy kids you see.

That’s why I’ve listed few kids themed umbrellas which are lightweight yet strong.
